REVIEWS FOR THE MIDNIGHT WORK "Here's another of those novels that are impossible to pigeonhole. It's part of Tor's supernatural romance line and it's about a woman who has just been turned into a vampire, but it's nothing like what you might expect. Sophie doesn't resent being turned because she really likes her new lifestyle, although here are a few side effects that she could do just as well without. And she really likes the vampire male who converted her, even though he thinks she's the reincarnation of a woman he loved in the fdistant past. But things really get going when she attracts the animosity of a deadly fairy, and must turn to a disreputable alchemist to defend herself, sort of. There's a nice balance of serious plot and comic relief in this one, and the romance is adroitly handled as well. One of the more pleasant surprises in this line." -- The SF Chronicle: "This is a jaunt into the underworld, where murder is OK if you're hungry, past lives are a given and fairies wanting to rule the world are to be avoided. And even though she's now part of the undead and rips out the occasional throat, Sophie still wants to buy a Christmas tree and never forgets to take care of her cat. An oddly lighthearted romp mixed in with mayhem, blood and gore."--Romantic Times BookClub Magazine "Sims takes risks… The result is a work of imagination and creativity."--Paperback Reader "A fabulous paranormal… Kassandra Sims provides a lighthearted yet dark humorous tale."--Paranormal Romance Reviews "Sophie, Suki, and Norah may not be the most loveable of characters ever but they certainly are real. Imagine the cast of Sex and the City, only younger, and worried about spilling blood on their designer handbags."--About.com |
